The following procedures are documented from testing with an ASUS Model X200M (laptop) running Windows 8.1. Your BIOS screen may differ as may the keys required to access the BIOS and the boot menu.<\/p>\n<h2>Park the USB<\/h2>\n<p>Since the procedures involve restarting the computer and pressing keys to intercept the automagic boot from the hard drive, it is best to prepare by inserting your bootable thumb drive in an available USB port ahead of time, rather than scrambling to plug it in during the boot process.<\/p>\n<h2>As Needed<\/h2>\n<p>The following procedure is conditional, based on the current settings for the two specified options. Once these changes are made in the bios, they will be retained until such time as they are again changed, whether deliberately, by accident, or through failure of the battery supplying charge to the CMOS. If you have already made these changes, move to the next section, \u201c<strong>Every Time<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>From powered down state, turn on the power OR, if already in Windows, choose <strong>Shut Down<\/strong>, <strong>Restart<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Then immediately press and hold the <strong>F2<\/strong> key or <strong>Del<\/strong>(ete) key (to enter the BIOS settings).<\/li>\n<li>When the BIOS settings page appears, go to the \u201c<strong>Boot<\/strong>\u201d tab (press right-arrow key twice).<\/li>\n<li>From the \u201c<strong>Boot<\/strong>\u201d tab, under \u201c<strong>Boot Configuration<\/strong>\u201d, check the setting for \u201c<strong>Launch CSM<\/strong>\u201d. If it is set to \u201c<strong>Disabled<\/strong>\u201d, press the <strong>Enter<\/strong> key, to change it. If it is already set to \u201c<strong>Enabled<\/strong>\u201d, skip to step <strong>7<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Choose the setting \u201c<strong>Enabled<\/strong>\u201d (up- or down-arrow key).<\/li>\n<li>Press the <strong>Enter<\/strong> key.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the \u201c<strong>Security<\/strong>\u201d tab (press right-arrow key once).<\/li>\n<li>On the \u201c<strong>Security<\/strong>\u201d tab, at the bottom, choose \u201c<strong>Secure Boot Menu<\/strong>\u201d (press up-arrow key once).<\/li>\n<li>Press the <strong>Enter<\/strong> key.<\/li>\n<li>If it is set to \u201c<strong>Enabled<\/strong>\u201d, press the <strong>Enter<\/strong> key, otherwise skip to step <strong>13<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Change the setting for \u201c<strong>Secure Boot<\/strong>\u201d to \u201c<strong>Disabled<\/strong>\u201d (up- or down-arrow key).<\/li>\n<li>Press the <strong>Enter<\/strong> key.<\/li>\n<li>If you changed either setting, press the <strong>F10<\/strong> key, and then the <strong>Enter<\/strong> key, to save changes and exit. Otherwise, just press the <strong>Esc<\/strong> key twice, and then the <strong>Enter<\/strong> key, to exit without saving changes.<\/li>\n<li>Press and hold the <strong>Esc<\/strong> key, as the computer restarts, to access the <strong>Boot<\/strong> menu. However, see the \u201c<strong>NOTE<\/strong>\u201d, below.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Every Time<\/h2>\n<p>The second part is performed each time booting from USB drive.<\/p>\n<p>Presuming that you have performed the one-time procedure above, and <strong>Launch CSM<\/strong> has already been set to <strong>Enabled<\/strong>, and <strong>Secure Boot<\/strong> has already been set to <strong>Disabled<\/strong>, and that your bootable USB flash drive is already inserted in an available USB port, on power up or restart, press and hold the <strong>Esc<\/strong> key to access the <strong>Boot<\/strong> menu.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>NOTE:<\/strong> Sometimes, on a restart, particularly from the BIOS settings, the computer will ignore the pressed <strong>Esc<\/strong> key and boot into Windows anyway, in which case, release the <strong>Esc<\/strong> key, choose shut-down, restart, and try it again, pressing the <strong>Esc<\/strong> key as soon as the blue \u201c<strong>Restarting<\/strong>\u201d screen appears and hold it down until the boot menu appears.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When presented with the <strong>Boot<\/strong> menu (\u201c<strong>Please select boot device:<\/strong>\u201d), you will typically see two entries indicating your USB bootable drive, one prefaced with \u201c<strong>UEFI:<\/strong>\u201d.
